In October 2018, SELECT affiliate university partner, Virginia Tech, was awarded a $3 million grant from the US Department of Energy for research on electrical vehicle charging infrastructure cybersecurity. Ryan Gerdes, principal investigator and assistant professor at Virginia tech, will lead the research in collaboration with industry researchers including vehicle and charger manufactures, utility operators, and university partners including SELECT university partner Utah State University. The collaboration will tackle key challenges in the cyber domain through resilient charging systems and software solutions. By developing systems to protect the infrastructure for fast charging, researchers can address and remedy vulnerabilities of the system while protecting user privacy.
